BRFC Colts back to winning ways
BRFC Colts 35
High Wycombe Colts 19
This Sunday saw the Colts contest a local derby against HWRFC, this turned out to be a very competitive game. It would be fair to say that in the first half BRFC could not claim that their rugby was as hot as the weather. That aside, the squad again showed that they are a very tough team to beat and rallied in the 2nd half to close out convincing winners. What was very pleasing about this match was that the squad included 5 x Under 16’s who performed very well and made significant contributions. This bodes well as the U16 squad transition to Colts next season. Thanks to both Harry Holmes and Harry Martin for stepping in to cover scrum half at the 11th hour – well done!
3 minutes into the match Niall scoops up a poor pass between the HW half-backs and breaks away to score and convert (7 - 0). There then follows a 20-minute period where BRFC fail to retain the ball and build phases, this allows HW to make a break and score levelling the contest with a converted try (7 - 7). BRFC react and following several phases push deep into the HW 22, Daniel Grimster who had already proved very destructive in mauls, ripping the ball at least half a dozen times in the first quarter drives over to score to the left of the posts in front of the clubhouse. McCarthy converts (14 - 7). The score does not change as the half closes; however, the spectators are treated to a fantastic catch and drive by BRFC forwards taking the ball at a defensive lineout, setting up a driving maul and marching the HW pack 20+ meters backwards from deep inside the Beaconsfield 22, moments later the whistle blows for half time.
At the start of the 2nd half several players are rested allowing the introduction of 4 new U16’s and the rest of the Colts bench. Aaron Browne playing at lock alongside Tom Mills with Tom Richards dropping back to No. 8 – could this be the shape of things to come? BRFC start brightly, 4 minutes into the new half BRFC re-cycle from a ruck, the ball is passed down the line to Daniel Richards who grub kicks the ball through, the ball bounces up off the baked turf into the hands of Maateo Vao (U16) who sprits clear to score close the posts – classy try! (21 - 7). Minutes later however some poor tackling allows a HW player to dance to the line to close the gap to 9 points. BRFC again struggling to find shape and momentum find themselves in ‘coffin corner’ and a poorly tapped lineout on a Beaconsfield throw is seized upon by HW who go over to score an easy try, this was converted taking the score to 21 - 19. HW with the momentum.
The last quarter sees the final rotation of players with Grimster re-introduced alongside Tom Mills, Aaron dropping to Flanker and Ben Logan returning to No. 8. BRFC gain territory and work several phases ‘pick and go’ by the forwards close the HW line – ‘Coops’ barrels over from 5 meters to score. Conversion by Niall who has bought his kicking boots (28 - 19). The last score of the game comes from a poor kick off by HW, the strengthening wind forces the hanging ball backwards, Grimster scoops the ball up, offloads to Aaron who runs 30 metres to score between the posts. Niall converts, maintaining a 100% kicking performance off the tee. Game over 35 -19.
