The BRFC Colts of 2016/17 sign off an era together with a win
BRFC Colts 36
Henley Colts 12
Firstly, a big thank you to Henley Colts for travelling to Beaconsfield for this friendly. This year Henley are a younger squad than the Beaconsfield Colts, they are nonetheless a very competitive team. We wish them well next weekend when they contest the National Colts U17 Shield Final at Sixways against Bromsgrove.
Today marked the end of an era for the BRFC U18’s, the bulk of whom have played together for 6 years and four players today Alexander Hancox, Dan Richards, Niall McCarthy and Calum Breckenridge have been part of this age group for 12 years.
To give everyone game time and allow Henley the opportunity to try different combinations in advance of next weekend, the coaches agreed to play 3 x 20 minute periods and the BRFC pack was de-powered by playing uncontested scrums.
From the whistle, it was clear that Henley were a very capable and well drilled side, possessing a talented and dangerous backline and gave BRFC a wakeup call by going 5 points to nil up by the end of the first period.
The second period saw BRFC introduce several of their stronger players and started to gain territorial advantage off phase play rather than trying to engineer breakthroughs off first phase ball. Niall McCarthy the BRFC captain started the comeback with a charge down and score after 2 minutes of the new period. There then followed a further three unanswered BRFC tries with Adam Smith grabbing a brace one of which was converted and Ben Logan muscling over just before the last break.
The final third of the match saw BRFC play all the available U18 players, marking the last 20 minutes of competitive rugby as youth players. This period saw the play ebb and flow with BRFC’s relative power nudging the contest at the breakdown, in defence and with ball in hand. Three scores resulted, two from Beaconsfield through Adam Smith, finishing his afternoon with a hat-trick and a strong run by Aaron Brown down the right wing to score, both of which were converted by Niall McCarthy. Henley had the final score of the afternoon which was converted.
The end to a truly memorable and successful season.
