Dave Rendell / Mark Herbert’s Mighty IIs continued their recent run of form with an unprecedentedly huge victory over Witney.
To their great credit Witney honoured the fixture, and arrived chez nous two men short. We of course helped them out, offering up burgeoning new talents Gerard Goss and Ross Ritchie to bolster their ranks. We ensured Witney were never short, with various other players helping them later in the game.
Even with such talent in their ranks Witney were unable to cope with the green and gold onslaught, and the metaphorical floodgates soon opened, with a tsunami of well executed tries.
There were 18 tries scored in all, with hat-tricks for Steve Roth and Todd Morgan, two for Dan Wilson, Josh Rankin and Alex Spring and Gerry Goss [who played the second half for us], and singles from Chris Hayes [on the wing!], Big Dave Breheney, Ross Ritchie [who played the second half for us] and, the most crowd-pleasing, Andy Robinson from at least half way.
Alex Spring converted 10/18. Alternatively, Alex Spring missed 8/18.
Newcomer Greg Cowan made an impressive return to rugby and club debut [for both clubs], after a two decade breather, albeit looking more comfortable in the front row than the right wing … welcome Greg.
The game was played in great spirits, and very well and sympathetically reffed by Clive Girling, whom we thank again. Thank you too to Witney for soldiering on, despite Clive’s offers of an early bath/beer.
